Foods for faster hair growth

May 28th 2009 11:10
We all know that eating a balanced diet is essential for healthy hair, but there are certain foods that will cause your hair to grow even faster than it would with your everyday balanced diet. Eating foods that are rich in protein, as well as foods that are rich in iron, will not only keep your hair shiny and full of life, but will also allow it to grow at its fastest possible rate.

Beautiful long blonde hair

As hair is essentially made up of protein, it makes sense that a diet that contains lots of protein would be necessary to achieve maximum growth. Protein-rich foods include chicken, fish, cheese and eggs, or if you're a vegan, grains, beans, seeds and nuts. As for foods rich in iron, these include red meat, green leafy vegetables (especially spinach), nuts, eggs, and soy products like tofu and soy milk. The beauty of many of these foods is that their iron and protein contents often overlap - that is, foods that are high in iron will be high in protein, and vice versa.

high protein foods

It's also important to actually EAT these foods, as opposed to merely supplementing them with vitamins. Nutrient absorption from food has been proven many times over to be far more effective than the nutrient absorption from vitamins, so if you don't actually eat the foods, you'll be doing yourself and your hair a disservice. Thankfully the foods that are high in protein and iron are quite diverse, so if you don't like the taste of one thing, you can always replace it with another.

sushi

The food that I've personally had the most success with, when it comes to increasing my hair's growth rate, is sushi. Like many women I go through 'food phases' - that is, favouring one type of food heavily for a few weeks or months, before moving onto something else. Since a fabulous sushi restaurant opened up in my neighbourhood a few months ago, I've been eating the stuff practically every day, and the results have been quite extraordinary! Even my boyfriend commented on how long my hair had become, and he's not normally the type to notice such things. Of course, sushi is extremely high in protein - being largely made of rice, seaweed, and raw fish - so this is what would have caused the steep increase in my hair's growth rate.

long hair grow fast

Remember that the most important element of your diet is that it's a balanced one, but by incorporating a greater proportion of both protein-rich and iron-rich foods, you'll be allowing your tresses to grow as fast as they possibly can. And when it comes to reaching your hair growth goals, the faster you get there, the better!

My hair just naturally grows really quickly. Which can be a good thing and can be a bad thing. I think it would be a bit of a pain if I ever decided to go for a short haircut. My son has inherited the same thing and it seems as soon as he has one haircut he needs another one. Maybe I should make sure he stops eating these foods.

My other son said something funny the other day. He said he doesn't want to eat the crusts on his sandwiches because he doesn't want curly hair. His grandparents have obviously been using that saying, trying to get him to eat the crusts. But it's completely backfired.

Janet - if only!

Samaritan, you're very lucky, you'd be the envy of many women wanting to grow their hair very long (like me!) Don't consider cutting out protein and iron for the sake of convenience though as they're essential to the body's overall health.... perhaps just make sure your sons don't ever become huge fans of sushi Haha it seems that the crusts/curly hair myth is an enduring one!

Hi nitinjethwa, sorry to hear about the hair loss. Unfortunately male baldness is not my area of expertise, but as far as I'm aware, there are options available to you, and the sooner you treat it, the better. In Australia there are clinics like Advanced Hair Studios and Ashley & Martin that give great advice and treatment options - chances are there are similar resources in Dubai, so check your local Yellow Pages listings. Best of luck for your wedding!

MNG, good on you - hopefully by now you're starting to see some growth I'm always impressed by people who can shave their heads for a good cause like that - men as well as women - because hair truly is your crowning glory and to sacrifice it shows the depth of your commitment to finding a cure for cancer.

I really enjoyed ur post! Ill be trying the sushi tip! I had long gorgeous hair that was all in long layers, i decided to cut bangs myself (bad bad idea!!) they ended up super thick and i cut parts that must never be cut! I went to the hairdresser and he fixed as much as he could, its been 2 months and i dont know what to do because i want my hair to be in long layers, should i continue to cut the bangs and shape them (but i dont want bangss!) or just leave them alone until i reach the lenght i want (up to my chin) and then get it styled... any tips for faster bang growth i would be thankful!!

Hey Izz, glad you liked it!

When growing out bangs, the best thing you can do is just let them grow until they're at a length where you can stand losing a cm or two, and only then have them styled. If you continually have them re-shaped, then that annoying growing-out phase just gets extended unnecessarily.

The good thing is that if it's already been a couple of months, it won't be too much longer until you can pin them out of the way. Hope this helps some - been there, done that twice myself, and never again!

My hair is annoying! It usuallly grows quite fast but when I get stressed (as I am now) its rate slows down (I've done growth measurements to prove this incase I was just imagining it - how bad is that?!), unfortunately I've recently gone through a stressful period in my life and now I want to grow it out as it's just brushing my shoulders....any idea why this happens when I get stressed? My diet doesnt change when I'm stressed although I do est less...could that be why? xx

The thing with stress is that it affects just about every system in the body - e.g., you're more likely to get sick when you're stressed out - so it's no surprise that it would also affect your hair's growth rate. It's possible that eating less during stressful times also has something to do with it as generally, the more good foods you consume (especially those high in protein and iron, as mentioned in the article), the closer you get to your hair's optimal rate of growth.

Ultimately though, if you can minimise the stress in your life - either by finding a balance between work and rest, or learning to deal with it better through relaxation techniques, positive thinking and the like - your whole body will thank you for it. I think people really underestimate how damaging too much stress can be on their bodies and how they experience life in general. Hoping your recent stressful period is over for now and that you find a good solution for dealing with it in the future.

I totally agree with the effects of stress on your body - including hair growth. My stress level was so high - my hair started falling out at an alarming rate and I am still trying to get it under control. I have tried almost everything I can think of, diet higher in protein, hair vitamins that include biotin and silica, yoga to reduce stress, got satin pillow cases, use Nioxin shampoo & conditioner, massage my scalp lightly to stimulate blood flow...and I stopped wearing a baseball cap when I run. I hope I am on the upside now. Women just can't rock the bald look like men can! Any other suggestions of something I may have missed.

Sounds like you've got it sorted! I can't think of anything you've missed. The yoga in particular is such a good choice for stressed out people - I couldn't believe the difference in my perspective when I took it up a few years back - it was practically a life saver for me! Glad to hear things are on the up and up for you too.
