Long hair = high style. Here's proof.

January 10th 2012 20:30
Hairstyle trends are never static. They can't be, by definition alone. Trends are always on the move, evolving and reviving, over and over again. Trends in hair and fashion are an inevitable response to the varied and often very subtle shifts occurring in arenas as diverse as popular culture, fringe subculture, world politics, even the economy.

Just stumbled across a lovely little article written by supermodel (and all-round superwoman) Heidi Klum, and thought I'd share it with my readers. With four children of her own - Leni, 7, Henry, 5, Johan, 4, and baby Lou, who's nearly 2 - Heidi knows her stuff when it comes to looking after little ones' locks, and understands what parents go through when their children's hairstyling wishes differ from their own! It also includes some useful advice on how to care for naturally curly hair - check it out here.

The idea that a celebrity's hairstyle can influence the tastes of the general public is nothing new. From Brigitte Bardot to Cher to Farrah Fawcett, every decade has had its share of superstars whose unique cuts or coiffures have been added to the annals of hairdressing history. Interestingly enough, none of these three women's hairstyles rated a mention when the UK's Hairdressing Council asked its members to list their ten most influential hairstyles of all time earlier this month. Some of the results might surprise you too... starting from number 10, they are:

Now, I'm not talking about the dye-your-hair-grey trend that emerged in the latter half of 2010. What I'm talking about is the scores of women in their mid-twenties whose hair is already starting to go grey by itself. According to a report published in the UK's Daily Mail, nearly one-third (32%) of British women under the age of 30 have already begun to go grey, up from just 18% twenty years ago - and many experts believe that stress is the culprit for this worrying new phenomenon.

Redheaded racism?

September 28th 2010 03:36
No-one likes to think of themselves as a racist. Most of us would never dream of belittling someone because of their skin colour, or because they speak with an accent that is different to their own. And yet - in Australia anyway - so many of us seem to be perfectly comfortable with having a redhead as the butt of our jokes. Derogatory names (like the ever-popular "ranga", a shortened form of "Orangutan"), sleazy comments ("Does the carpet match the drapes?") and blatant mockery in TV ads are just a few of the ways in which redheads are being unfairly targeted, purely on the basis of their hair colour. But does this constitute racism? Or is it simply, like with "dumb blondes", another case of annoying - but ultimately harmless - hair colour stereotyping?

What causes hair loss in women?

August 27th 2010 05:40
It's something that is rarely talked about, and yet is becoming increasingly common. Female hair loss is a problem for millions of women around the world (30 million in the United States alone, according to the American Academy of Dermatology) and its various causes are often quite different from those that result in male baldness. For decades, doctors believed that the androgenic alopecia that accounts for 95% of male hair loss was the culprit for women's hair loss as well; now it's widely accepted that for women, it can be caused by many factors - including hormonal problems like PCOS, extreme stress, severe illness, thyroid disorders, genetics, negative reactions to medication, and more.

As a woman, losing your hair can be as traumatic as it is embarrassing.

Is long hair dead?

August 18th 2009 18:18
In a word: no. Long hair is timeless; it's a style that will no doubt last forever. But more and more, we're seeing articles in beauty magazines and blogs that are declaring long hair 'dead and buried', the most recent one appearing in Harper's Bazaar. While they do make some good arguments for having short hair (a long mane is certainly not for everyone), they are largely trend-based, and therefore, prone to change. As such, you need to think very, very carefully before chopping off your long locks in the name of fashion.

Hair colour stereotypes

August 3rd 2009 09:05
Whether you're a blonde, brunette, redhead or have black hair, then chances are you've had to deal with hair colour stereotyping before. If someone doesn't know you then the only thing they can judge you on is your appearance, and naturally, this includes your hair colour. It's an extremely superficial way of judging people - not to mention annoying, and frequently inaccurate - but it still happens all the time! So what does your hair colour say about you?

Hairstyles through the decades

July 22nd 2009 07:48
While many hairstylists claim that hair fashions change on a yearly basis, these changes are usually quite minimal. Unless you're in the hairdressing industry, it's unlikely that you'd be able to distinguish a 2009 layered 'do from, say, a 2007 one. But if you look at the changing hair fashions decade by decade, the evolution is really quite extraordinary! Like all fashions, the hairstyle changes are largely dependent on the pop culture of the time, as well as shifting societal values. Let's take a look at the hair fashions of the last sixty years, one decade at a time.

Hair... and the heart

April 3rd 2009 11:38
Anyone who says that hair is nothing but strands of dead protein growing out of our scalps does not understand its importance, both to the woman it is a part of, and the society she inhabits. Hair not only conveys our sense of style to the world, it can be a manifestation of our inner emotional state.

Why men prefer long hair on women

June 27th 2008 01:43
Research has repeatedly shown that when it comes to hair length, the majority of men find long hair on women to be more attractive than short hair. While the obvious reason for this is that it appears more feminine, there are also evolutionary factors - namely, that long hair signifies genetic strength and overall health.

When it comes to changing your hairstyle, there are many things you need to consider before you make your hairdresser's appointment. If you're planning on cutting your hair very short after it's been long for some time, then read the Getting the Chop posts on this blog - they outline what you need to think about before you take that step.
