Here's a handful of tips on how to take care of your hairbrush, so that it lasts the distance and keeps your hair looking its best.

Extremely damaged hair is not hard to spot. The symptoms are obvious: it feels dry and porous, tangles easily, and will make an awful crunching sound when rolled between your fingertips. But slightly damaged hair is not as easy to diagnose, unless you know this little trick... a technique that one of London's top hairstylists, Tom Thaw, calls "strange but true." Interested? Read on!

The CO wash

March 16th 2010 01:19
Closely related to the CWC (that is, condition-wash-condition), the CO wash is something that I do on an almost weekly basis. CO simply stands for ‘conditioner only’, and it means exactly that: skipping the usual shampoo and going straight to the conditioner. It may sound strange but there’s method to this madness: first of all, it gives my hair an often much-needed conditioning boost, and second of all, it provides a quick clean without the need for a proper shampoo.

Maintain your hair's vitality by not over-washing it.

The good oils

January 29th 2010 11:29
If your hair is dry and prone to flyaways, and even the salon quality leave-in conditioners have little to no effect, then it might be time to go back to nature and try oiling your hair. Using hair oils is a beauty secret originating from India that has been steadily increasing in popularity in Western society. If you've ever seen an Indian woman with extra long and thick, yet incredibly shiny hair, now you know why: chances are, she oils it rather than using a chemical-laden, store bought conditioner. There are several different oils to choose from; the right one for you will depend on your hair's texture and overall condition.

You know that saying, "Be careful what you wish for, lest it come true"? It applies to your hair colour as well! These days, hair dyes are pretty advanced in that if you wish for a certain colour - say, baby blonde - you will be capable of achieving it. The problem here is that so many women wish for something that is a long way from what comes naturally to them. As such, the end result often doesn't look much good, and sometimes it can look downright awful.

Winter hair

January 16th 2009 06:00
Damaging your hair in winter is about as easy as slipping over on the ice - very, very easy. The strong winds create tangles, the heating inside buildings can dry out your hair, and because of the cold you may feel compelled to blow-dry your hair every day. All of these factors can lead to dull-looking hair so you need to be proactive in taking extra care of it during the colder months.

Summer hair

November 13th 2008 10:22
Now that summer is just around the corner (for us Aussies anyway) it's time to take a more relaxed approach to your hair. If you've been styling it almost every day, then stop - now! Get a deep conditioning treatment, either at home or at the salon, and a trim if you really need one, then choose to style your hair less often in the name of saving your tresses from damage... and of course, staying on-trend. There's nothing worse than overly-done hair on a hot summer's day.

Frequency of shampooing

August 11th 2008 05:16
Many shampoos say that they are suitable for daily use, but if you're washing your hair every day, then you're doing it too often. Shampooing every day strips your hair of its natural oils, and these oils are designed to protect your hair from the harsh elements of the environment, including sunlight and air pollution. Take away these natural oils and you're exposing your hair to breakage and overall damage.

The CWC

May 13th 2008 03:11
Now what, you ask, is a CWC? It stands for condition-wash-condition, and it means exactly that - conditioning before you shampoo, then conditioning again. It made my hair extremely soft and silky, and it's worth a try to see if it brings the same results for you.

Way back in the days of old, women were told that they should brush their hair 100 times daily in order to keep it in good condition. In fact, doing this will cause excess breakage to the hair shaft and is not at all recommended! Today, most experts agree that hair should only be brushed enough to style it, or detangle it. Basically, you should brush your hair as little as possible, as every brushing will cause breakage to the hair shaft - that's right, every time you hear a little 'snap', that's a hair breaking.

The return to natural hair colour

March 12th 2008 23:33
Women have been colouring their hair for decades, but recently a new trend has emerged - the return to their natural hair colour. Also known as 'virgin' hair, your natural hair colour is likely to be the most flattering for your face, as well as being extra shiny from not being tortured with hair colourants. It takes years to grow out hair colour damage, but when you do, you will notice the difference in your hair's feel and appearance.
