The beauty of balayage

March 10th 2010 07:39
While I always emphasise how important it is to embrace your hair’s natural colour, there will be times when you just can’t live without a new hue. And that’s perfectly okay: as they say, a change can be as good as a holiday! When it comes to lightening up, one of the most natural-looking and modern colouring techniques available right now is balayage. Essentially, balayage involves painting sections of the hair freehand, rather than using foils or a streaking cap. The end result is a sexy “grown out” look that takes literally minutes to achieve, and requires less maintenance than traditional highlights. Sounds about right for you? Read on!

Hair accessories get feisty!

February 17th 2010 00:29
If you love headbands but aren't a fan of their sugary sweet, goody-two-shoes image, then it may be time to shake up that idea by throwing a row of metal spikes into the mix! These vicious-looking headbands by US designer Jennifer Behr add some serious ferocity to what was once a very meek accessory indeed.

The slicked-back side part

February 10th 2010 06:31
This look is certainly not for everyone, but if you can pull it off it will definitely give you a head start in achieving the hottest hairstyles of 2010. The slicked-back side part, complete with low chignon bun, has made frequent appearances on catwalks of late and if you're among the lucky few with an angular jaw and high cheekbones, you'll find that this look will work just as well for you. It's a great evening style that really draws attention to your facial features and best of all, there's no heat styling required! Here's how to get it.

The romantic updo

January 2nd 2010 04:31
There's nothing like a soft, tousled bun for those occasions when you want your hair to look its best, while at the same time not having it look too "done". This updo is romantic, feminine, carefree and quite timeless: it was hugely popular in the 1990s due to its ease of styling, and made a major comeback a few years ago when bohemian style slipped back into vogue. Celebrities have embraced it as a red carpet hairstyle, but it's ultimately one that you can wear any time of the day or night.

How to get 'old Hollywood' hair

October 9th 2009 09:04
Old Hollywood glamour is a style that has been coveted for decades, and has seen a huge surge in popularity among young stars over the last couple of years. In particular, the neat, finger-wave hairstyle - made popular by big-screen glamazons of the 40s and 50s like Rita Hayworth, Veronica Lake and Marilyn Monroe - is one that continues to pop up on red carpets today. It's the ideal complement to a 40s-style dress and though it does take a bit of practice to get it perfect, it's a style that you can quite easily create at home.

The return of long layers

October 2nd 2009 01:32
After years of short, choppy layers dominating the catwalk and celebrity circuit, it seems that long layers are finally making a return to popularity. And it's not hard to see why: a long layered cut is one of the most versatile hairstyles you can choose from, and flatters the majority of face shapes. It's easy to maintain and gives volume and texture to flat hair, while providing the ideal shape for naturally curly hair... the list of reasons to choose this cut practically goes on forever!

Tips for styling naturally curly hair

September 4th 2009 02:22
Anyone who was born with naturally curly hair knows that it can be both a blessing and a curse. Because it essentially grows in a zigzag formation, it takes longer to attain a certain length than it would if it were straight. It is also prone to dryness, and on humid days it seems like there's nothing you can do to keep it under control! But on the plus side, it's a look that is highly sought-after and can be absolutely stunning if you know how to style it properly.

Styling super long hair

February 4th 2009 01:30
If your hair is longer than hip length, then you are officially a part of the tiny percentage of women with super long hair. First of all, congratulations - it is quite a feat to resist haircutting for so many years, and you will undoubtedly be the envy of some of your friends and acquaintances (though most will not admit it). Super-long hair will turn heads wherever you go - it really is a thing of beauty and will make you stand out from your short-haired and medium-length counterparts.

Layering your hair

October 29th 2008 06:29
If your hair is long and feels like it's just hanging there, consider getting some layers cut in to give it some life. Layers work particularly well if your hair is straight or slightly wavy, and if your hair's curly they give your style shape (if cut correctly). They've been in style for years now, and in Sydney the trend is for excessive layering, to give the hair an edgy look. I say excessive because too much layering causes you to lose length, and it can look unbalanced too - I've seen some awful examples!

Avoiding hair disasters

July 17th 2008 05:34
If you're bored with your hair's current length and want a change, make sure you do your research before committing to a new style. Most hair disasters occur when you haven't thought about it enough, and you choose to do something impulsive. Remember when Keri Russell from the TV show Felicity had her beautiful, waist-length curls cut off? The show's ratings fell by 30%, and she was reminded of her impulse decision for years later on various Celebrity Oops shows.

A fresh colour can be the ultimate pick-me-up, and a way of signalling a new phase in your life. You need to decide if you want to do it yourself at home, or go to a salon to have it professionally done. There are pros and cons for each - here is a guide to colouring at home versus going to a hairdresser.
