How often should I brush my hair?

Way back in the days of old, women were told that they should brush their hair 100 times daily in order to keep it in good condition. In fact, doing this will cause excess breakage to the hair shaft and is not at all recommended! Today, most experts agree that hair should only be brushed enough to style it, or detangle it. Basically, you should brush your hair as little as possible, as every brushing will cause breakage to the hair shaft - that's right, every time you hear a little 'snap', that's a hair breaking.
While you don't have to invest in the most expensive brushes, it is important to keep your hairbrush in good condition. Replace it every couple of years, or when it starts to show signs of wear and tear. Also, you should brush your hair with a boar bristle brush a couple of times a week, to enhance shine and spread the hair's natural oils from the roots to the tips. Never, ever brush your hair when it's wet - use a wide-toothed comb to detangle it.
As well as keeping your hairbrushes in good order, you should keep an eye on your brushing technique. Never yank a hairbrush from the roots to the tips, regardless of how much of a hurry you're in, as this will cause damage that you'll notice in your leisure. Gently brush from the ends to the roots, and if you can do it in front of a mirror, then so much the better. Just remember: don't brush it excessively, as doing this will cause damage - the last thing you want, especially if you're growing it.
