Is long hair dead?

August 18th 2009 18:18
In a word: no. Long hair is timeless; it's a style that will no doubt last forever. But more and more, we're seeing articles in beauty magazines and blogs that are declaring long hair 'dead and buried', the most recent one appearing in Harper's Bazaar. While they do make some good arguments for having short hair (a long mane is certainly not for everyone), they are largely trend-based, and therefore, prone to change. As such, you need to think very, very carefully before chopping off your long locks in the name of fashion.

By its very nature, long hair is not about being trendy. If it only took a couple of months to grow your hair from a pixie cut to your waist, then maybe it would be, but at the same time it would be far less valuable. Anything that takes time and patience to acquire automatically has a higher value, and if it's something as beautiful as a long, silky mane, then it is even more desirable. Growing your hair long is (pardon the pun) a long-term commitment, and as such, it's about creating your own signature style, not blindly following the fashions. In the words of Coco Chanel, "Fashion fades, only style remains the same."

Alessandra Ambrosio

And while the short crops of Agyness Deyn, Victoria Beckham and Halle Berry may be what's hot right now, when it comes to classically beautiful women, the long-haired ones far outnumber their short-haired comrades. Look at just about every Miss Universe or Victoria's Secret model: sure, they have the faces, the bodies and the attitudes to make them hot, but another thing they virtually all have in common? Luscious, flowing long hair. It's feminine, it's elegant, and it is undeniably timeless.

So if you're at risk of being swayed by the increasing number of 'long hair is dead' articles, just remember that classic style will always trump fashion, and that when it comes to your hair, yours is the only opinion that matters. Have a read around this site (we're very pro long hair here), and I also highly recommend a visit to The Long Hair Community, to remind yourself of just how fabulous having long hair really is.

I used to have long hair. We had a falling out over the sink.
I reckon all hair is dead.

I was wondering who would jump on that one! Yes, all hair is dead, you're right in the most literal sense.

Thanks for the comment Norm

When I was in school, I used to have short hair because I thought that it was easier to maintain short hair compared to long hair. I was wrong about that because it's hard to fix bad hair days if you have short hair. If you have long hair, you can simply tie your hair and it's all done.

So I started to grow my hair when I was in college and I love my long hair! I couldn't care less about fashion but for me, you can opt whatever style you want with long hair but limited with short hair. So to people who want to chop your hair, my advice is don't because like Journeywoman has mentioned before, long hair is a timeless style

yeah long hair is great if you are young and thin, and if it is in good condition

personally i havent had long hair since i was a teen because i damage my hair with heat and chemicals, and i dont have the face shape for a flat draping style

i do envy some ladies with beautiful long-haired manes, but i also acknowledge that 90% of the time it is due to extensions, a weave, or a hair-piece

Well, most people that I met have long, luscious hair especially Chinese. I have no idea how they did it because their hair looks so pretty no matter what they did to their hair e.g perming, coloring, straightening

Suhaili, I agree with long hair taking less time to style than short hair - when my hair was short I had to blow dry it on a daily basis so that it would sit right, whereas with long hair I use heat styling maybe three times a year! Funny how people seem to equate short hair with ease of styling; it just isn't the case.

As for the Chinese hair, yes it always looks great as people of Asian descent have naturally thick, and usually fast growing hair, compared to people of other ethnicities. There's a Korean girl in one of my Uni classes with straight, waist-length dark hair, it's absolutely stunning!

Morgan, yes celebs and models frequently use extensions, but I've only come across two 'regular' girls with extensions, and they both looked really fake (you could see the joins with one!) Not my cup of tea!

Cheers for the comments all.

I don't really have an opinion in regards to whether long hair girls or short hair girls are hotter, as long as they are not as short as a male's hair.

Cheers

I've always had longish hair, but when I was younger I had hair that hung down past my bottom. I couldn't pull that off anymore at my age. But I did go with short hair once. It didn't suit me at all. I figure when my hair gets in the way I can just pull it back.

I've considered trying extensions to see if I can add some volume, but I'm afraid it would look like a plastic rat's nest.

Well, for me extension is not worth it because it's harder to take care plus it will fall off after a few months. Extension is costly but it's not the kind of style that you can keep for long
