Layering your hair

October 29th 2008 06:29
If your hair is long and feels like it's just hanging there, consider getting some layers cut in to give it some life. Layers work particularly well if your hair is straight or slightly wavy, and if your hair's curly they give your style shape (if cut correctly). They've been in style for years now, and in Sydney the trend is for excessive layering, to give the hair an edgy look. I say excessive because too much layering causes you to lose length, and it can look unbalanced too - I've seen some awful examples!

Essentially, layering the hair involves cutting it at different lengths throughout the hairstyle, giving it shape and the illusion of fullness. It's a very flattering style, particularly if you get shorter pieces cut at the front as they frame your face perfectly.

So if you do decide layers are for you, ask your stylist for light layering around your face, longer at the back. Then, next time you go for a trim, get them again. From then on, ask your stylist for regular trims with no layers - your hair should be well shaped by then and you don't need to keep cutting them in. If your hairstylist knows what you want then you won't end up losing too much length. I've been friends with my hairstylist for twenty years so she knows exactly what I like when it comes to my hair - but not all of us have that luxury. Take pictures if you need to, as any kind of hairstyle change is important and should be done the way you want it to be.

Layers are ideal for those who like their long hair, but want a change. Consider them a low-maintenance way of bringing new life to your hair.

I have baby fin hair and got it chopped into concave bob. The layering at the back makes my hair look so thick, it's fabulous! The length at the front which is just below my chin also makes it look way fuller. Layering is fabulous if it's done well.
