Michelle Williams keeps her pixie cut for 'somebody who really loved it'

Who says a haircut can't be meaningful? Actress Michelle Williams, who has a six-year-old daughter with the late Heath Ledger, recently told the UK's Elle magazine that she keeps her now-trademark pixie cut in memoriam of the actor... despite the fact that she's currently single, and is only too aware that most men prefer women who wear their hair long.
"I've really grown into it - I feel like myself with short hair," she told the magazine in an interview for their December 2011 issue, where she also appears on the cover.
"And it's been a really long time since I had long hair, five years. Of course, the only people who like it are gay men and my girlfriends. Straight men across the board are not into this hair!"
The 31-year-old star, who began her career alongside Katie Holmes on the TV show Dawson's Creek, scored herself a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her role in the controversial 2005 film Brokeback Mountain. It was on the set of this film that she met Heath Ledger, whom she dated for three years prior to his tragic death in 2008.
Michelle says that the couple's daughter, Matilda Rose, would like to see her mother with longer hair but that she's refusing to let it grow, saying that the pixie cut is her way of keeping Heath's memory alive.
"What Matilda would love is for her mum to grow out the cropped hair, though that's unlikely to happen anytime soon," Williams said. "I cut it for the one straight man who has ever liked short hair and I wear it in memorial of somebody who really loved it."
Williams will be hitting the big screen later this month as Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn - a role that she says made her very apprehensive, due to the pressure of "living up to people's expectations, as well as my own expectations."
She's also been cast as Glinda the Good Witch in the big-budget Oz: The Great and Powerful, which is the prequel to The Wizard of Oz and will likely be in cinemas sometime in 2013.

Before, and after: Michelle Williams looked beautiful as a long-haired woman, but felt like short hair suited her style more.
