Rocking the new red
May 21st 2011 21:44
Move over, graduated colour! The hottest look for 2011 is that of rich, vibrant red. Whether it's a classic Prince Harry ginger shade or a modern pink-toned hue a la Rihanna, this year's red is to be worn as an all-over colour, forgoing the more subtle highlights of seasons past.
Drew Barrymore, Scarlett Johansson, Whitney Port and Blake Lively have all made the switch to red this year, but if you've never stepped into redheaded territory yourself, there are a couple of things worth noting before you begin.
Firstly, be aware that red is quite a tricky colour to get looking just right. While there is a shade out there to suit most skin tones, finding the perfect red for you will often be a matter of trial and error. Because of this it's worth doing your research first: if you can collect a few pictures of women with complexions similar to your own, it'll help immensely when the time comes to decide which shade of red is going to work best with your own natural colouring.
Secondly, keep in mind that hair colour trends come and go... so make temporary hair colourants your new best friend! Most leading brands of permanent hair colour also have temporary and semi-permanent dyes that last for less than ten washes, so if you're uncertain about whether a particular shade is right for you, then these are the way to go. If you really love the end result you can always switch up to a permanent colour later on.
Finally, know that whenever you make a major change to your hair colour, you'll usually need to make a change with your makeup as well. Updating your makeup colours is a lot of fun but can be costly, so make sure you have a bit of extra cash available for this before you break out the hair dye.
Otherwise you're good to go! Here's a handful of before-and-after shots of celebs who have taken on the trend for red hair in 2011.
