Strange Celebrity Trend: Ugly Hair
September 25th 2009 05:53
While most of us try to keep our hair looking as fabulous as possible, an odd new trend is beginning to appear in Hollywood and on the music scene... that's right, I'm talking about ugly hair. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but most would agree that the hairstyles these celebs have been wearing - though very brave - are not the most attractive looks we've ever seen!
Drew's hair definitely looks interesting, but the black-tips-on-blonde-bob is just not doing it for me. While dipping the ends of your hair in a contrasting shade can look amazing if the colour is rainbow bright and your hair is long, doing so with a bob and black dye just looks trashy. Take note, girls!
There's peroxide, and then there's peroxiding your hair to the point where it's ready to fall out, and that's exactly what Sorority Row star Rumer Willis has done here. Contrast this with her mother Demi Moore's hair - long, brown, silky and oh-so-natural - and we can only hope that this is just a phase Rumer's going through and she'll one day realise that natural is usually the best option.
Okay, so this one's for a movie role, but it's worth mentioning as with a haircut like this, it shows that Kristen Stewart is not concerned about suffering for her art! The pitch-black mullet, created to make her look the spitting image of The Runaways rocker Joan Jett, is far less likely to create hair envy among her fan base as her long, shiny and natural brown Twilight hair. She's been known to switch it up for movie roles (check out her hair gallery here) but let's hope she never goes for anything quite so... retro.... in the future.
It looks like Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie and actress Kate Bosworth have been going to the same stylist: one who thinks that oily, stern and uber-tight ponytails are the look of the season. Fergie's is bad but Kate's is even worse, because it is so tight that it drags her face back and emphasises her flaws, while at the same time making her look rather inhuman. Hair is meant to frame the face and soften the features, and as you can see here, super-tight, and probably unwashed updos make even the hottest stars look harsh and, well... ugly.
With a face like that and a name like Pixie Geldof, you can get away with having terrible hair... just. This oddly cut, short-fringed peroxided bouffant is certainly not a look you want to try to replicate yourself, because on anyone else, it would just look ridiculous. Can you imagine how beautiful Pixie would be with long, natural hair? I can, but only just, and it'll take her a while to get there after doing this to herself.
Now this is a look that defies belief, but even more unbelievable is the fact that not one, but three major celebs have taken to shaving half of their heads. Not only is this style, in my opinion, the epitome of ugly hair, but it's also quite an effort to maintain - you need to continue shaving half your head for as long as you wish to keep the style! And after that, your only option is to cut it very, very short. Hopefully this trend stops with Cassie, Rihanna and Carmen, because I'd hate to see more celebrities ruining their hair with this ugliest of ugly hairstyles.
As you can see, ugly hair is something that A-listers are no longer merely putting up with on bad hair days - it's something that they're actually choosing for themselves! The reason that ugly hair has become something of a trend is quite mystifying, but I can only assume that it's something to do with nonconformity: that is, looking different from the rest of the beauties. At any rate, it's something to keep in mind if you've recently become the victim of a hair disaster... your hair may look bad, but at least you're in good company! As for the rest of us, it's good to have examples of how we don't want our hair to look. Let me know your thoughts by leaving a comment below.
