The slicked-back side part

February 10th 2010 06:31
This look is certainly not for everyone, but if you can pull it off it will definitely give you a head start in achieving the hottest hairstyles of 2010. The slicked-back side part, complete with low chignon bun, has made frequent appearances on catwalks of late and if you're among the lucky few with an angular jaw and high cheekbones, you'll find that this look will work just as well for you. It's a great evening style that really draws attention to your facial features and best of all, there's no heat styling required! Here's how to get it.

You'll want to start out with second, third or even fourth-day hair, as this is when your hair is at its most manageable. Comb out all the tangles and part the hair at the most flattering point, back to the crown of your head (see the pic below). Apply a small amount of hair gel - that's right, the old-school stuff they used in the 80s - to both of the parted sections, and comb through with the finest-toothed comb you own.

This is where your part should be.

Pull your hair back into a low, tight ponytail, and spritz the ponytail with water. Twist it, then wrap it around itself to create the tiniest bun you can, and pin it into place with bobby pins (or hair pins, if you prefer). Smooth another small amount of gel over the hair, and finish with a liberal application of shine spray. And you're done! It really is that easy.

One of the greatest things about the slicked-back side part is that it can be adapted to just about any hair length, and it suits all hair types except the very curly. It's also ideal for those of us growing our hair from short to long (see Mrs Tom Cruise up there for inspiration). If your hair doesn't quite reach the bun, then by all means use bobby pins to keep it in place. Embrace this style and you'll find that it will stay fresh all night, and is the ideal complement to the most dramatic of outfits.
