To trim or not to trim?

Hairdressers and magazines will tell you that you need to have your hair trimmed every six weeks, but this is not the case for everyone. If you’re in the process of growing your hair, having trims this often will result in very slow progress. If you take good care of your hair, there’s no reason why you can’t get it trimmed just once every six months, or even once a year. It’s in the hairdresser’s interest to tell you that you need trims more often (it’s the bread and butter of their wages) but if you don’t have any split ends, then there’s no reason to trim.
Some girls, in place of trimming, will go on ‘search and destroy’ missions – that is, finding single split ends and cutting them off one at a time. Most of us wouldn’t have the time or patience for this technique, and there is no evidence to show that it makes your hair look any better, so the ultimate way of avoiding trims is to just be very gentle with your hair. Take your time when de-tangling it – ripping a brush through it will only cause damage – and comb from the ends of the hair up, rather than pulling a tangle the length of your hair.
Whether to trim or not is entirely up to you, but keep in mind that it’s not necessary to do every six weeks – unless you have a short crop that needs continual re-shaping. If you want long hair, the best way to get it is to stay away from the hairdresser for as long as possible. You’ll avoid impulsive decisions and save money at the same time, and if you’re taking good care of your hair then split ends won’t become an issue for a long time following your last visit to the salon.
