Why men prefer long hair on women

June 27th 2008 01:43
Research has repeatedly shown that when it comes to hair length, the majority of men find long hair on women to be more attractive than short hair. While the obvious reason for this is that it appears more feminine, there are also evolutionary factors - namely, that long hair signifies genetic strength and overall health.

Look at it this way: hair will only grow if your body is healthy, and health is a major factor when it comes to men selecting a partner. If your hair is shoulder-length or longer, it shows that you've been healthy for at least two years, and the longer your hair is, the more healthy you appear. Youthfulness is a major factor in genetic strength - and consequently attraction - and as many women over the age of 40 choose to have their hair cut short, having longer hair makes you appear younger.

Of course, it is entirely up to you what length of hair you choose, and many women look equally beautiful with short hair as they do long (Halle Berry and Sienna Miller, for example). Also, men's preferences are entirely individual, and many profess to preferring shorter hair on women. Cultural and societal factors will also come into play. But when it comes to the majority of men, it's long hair on women that is a distinct preference.

Regardless of your hair's length, if you take good care of it and ensure that it is clean and shiny, it will be perceived as being attractive to men. Short, healthy-looking hair is greatly preferable to long hair that is damaged and unkempt. But if you can manage to grow your hair long whilst keeping it in top condition, then chances are men will find you far more attractive than your short-haired counterparts.

Interesting...I wonder if it has anything to do with using the hair (or the thought of it) as a toy/tool in a certain situation... ...or is it really just the look they prefer...

Hmmm, it is possible! But then, long hair also softens your features and makes you look more feminine, so I'd say it's mostly the look. But it could be a combination of the two. Hopefully a guy will comment and enlighten us.

sometimes long hair makes women look much older. It can be really awful on some.

Johnny, yes you're right, it's all about personal preference anyway. I'm sure you noted the favour of long hair, in my opinion.... beauty of blogging.

So do you prefer short hair on all women, or only on some?

Cheers for stopping by
