Your hair after having a baby (Part One)

Expecting a baby? Congratulations! Pregnancy is undoubtedly one of the most exciting, life affirming but nerve wracking times in a woman's life, especially when the child is your first. Having had my first baby in June of last year, I can also attest to it being a time of major change for a woman's hair as well... I found that my own hair had never grown so quickly, or been so oily, in my entire life. But now that my daughter is eight months old, I've discovered that the crazy-fast hair growth I experienced during my pregnancy was, quite literally, just the beginning of a whole new series of changes to my hair. Not to mention my life!
As you've probably already guessed from the fact that I write a hairstyle tips blog, I'm something of a hair obsessive. I've always loved my hair and have had tons of fun experimenting with different hairstyles in the past. The last few years I've just been trying to grow it as long as I can, while keeping it its natural colour... so right now, it's nearly waist length, fine-to-medium textured with a slight wave, and light brown in colour with a smattering of blonde sun streaks.
And as you'd expect, I've always devoted plenty of time to looking after it. I knew that this time would be drastically reduced once the bub came along, but surely I'd still be able to find at least five minutes a day to brush my hair, right?
Wrong.
Literally days would pass before I even touched my hairbrush. My go-to hairstyle was a hastily fixed topknot, finger-combed at the front and one big scrunched-up mess at the back. I'd shampoo and condition my hair every three days or so, without actually detangling it before or after... and while breastfeeding my daughter one night around 3am, I discovered an accidental (and very much unwanted) dreadlock in my once-adored tresses. Newborns are THAT time consuming!
Eventually, I figured out that the only way to keep the tangles out of my hair was to keep it in a permanent braid. I found this to be the best night-time hairstyle for sleeping (not that you get to sleep very much when you have a baby) and it would still look okay - albeit in a very tousled kind of way! - when I left the house with the braid still in.
And once the wispy bits at the front became excessive and annoying, I'd pull the whole lot back into a ponytail, braid and all. Stylish? Hell, no... but ultimately, no-one expects you to be when you're a new mother. As long as you have a clean, fed, and happy baby, and your clothes look mostly free of vomit, then you're doing just fine.
